I love this carving, the original person who commissioned this clearly did too. The original intaglio was carved in jasper on the reverse side of an ancient Gnostic magical gem, sometime between the 1st - 6th B.C. It had quite an eclectic and international character, as the imagery, a fantastical eagle headed god, was mostly Egyptian, the letters Greek, the god's dress Roman, the angelic names Jewish. The carving and detail were carefully done and very fine. This would have been quite an expensive commission for the time, suggesting perhaps that the owner had some significant expectations of the gem's protective and amuletic powers.
