Ear piercing is one of the oldest known forms of body adornment and modification, with references dating back to early history. Gold earrings were found in Queen Puabi's tomb in the Sumerian Royal Cemetery at Ur, frescoes on Santorini show gold earrings worn throughout the Minoan Civilization, Mycenaean's wore earrings too. Surviving walls at Persepolis in Iran show soldiers wearing earrings, and they are seen on men in art from the Assyrian Empire. 

Earrings were popular in ancient Rome, among the Ainu in Japan, during the Silla and Goryeo through Joseon periods in Korea. Tutankhamun and Plato both wore earrings. Lavish earrings have always been popular in India, and in Renaissance Europe. Sailors wore an earring once they had crossed the equator or sailed around the world.
