Maki-e is a traditional Japanese paint technique developed over a millennia ago where lacquer is applied to surfaces and pure gold or silver paint is mixed in for flat or raised ornamentation. Mosiacs are created from tiny abalone tiles often accented with the same gold or silver paint.

Moyo Gems is an ethical gemstone collaboration born in Tanzania that works with female artisanal gem miners in the Umba Valley to assure rubies, sapphires, tourmalines, garnets, citrines and amethysts from mine to market. They work to empower women miners to work safely, mine better, improve financial security and create stable, equitable markets for fairtrade. We are pleased to purchase their gems, along with others that have been artisanally mined in Tanzania and Kenya, from Anza Gems. More information can be found at www.moyogems.com and www.anzagems.com.

10% of profits of each piece of jewelry containing a Moyo Gem will be donated to the Maternal Health Fund a 501(c)(3) dedicated to the prevention and treatment of childbirth injuries by building sustainable capacity with local partners in Sub-Saharan Africa.
