Maki-e is a traditional Japanese paint technique developed over a millennia ago where lacquer is applied to surfaces and pure gold or silver paint is mixed in for flat or raised ornamentation. Mosiacs are created from tiny abalone tiles often accented with the same gold or silver paint. These particular pearls have been decorated using the paint technique only.
