According to the early Greek myths, everywhere Pegasus the Winged Horse struck his hoof to the earth, a water spring burst forth. One such day, Pegasus was peacefully drinking from such a spring when Bellepheron, who became King of Corinth, captured him and then used him in his battle against the Chimera.
There are varying tales about how Bellerophon found Pegasus; the most common being that the goddess Athena gave Bellerophon a golden bridle with which to catch and eventually tame Pegasus. Pegasus became a civic symbol in Corinth, and his image was struck on its famed silver Staters, in turn inspired this carving.
