The ancients believed that rock crystal was formed by ice which had been hardened into stone through intense freezing. Pliny the Elder recorded that it was found in many places but the very best came from India. Vessels made from rock crystal were known in Greece and Egypt from the second millennium BC, but they were luxury products and became highly desirable among Rome's wealthiest. He also recorded that when Nero received news that all was lost, he became so enraged that he smashed two rock crystal cups so that they could never be used again - a measure of how valuable they were as once broken, the rock crystal couldn't be repaired.
