Precious coral skeletons have been harvested since antiquity for decorative use. Coral jewellery has been found in ancient Egyptian and prehistoric European burials and continues to be made to the present day. It was especially popular during Victorian times. There are many myths associated with coral, the Romans believed it could protect children from harm, cure wounds made by snakes and scorpions and diagnose disease by changing color. In the Middle Ages in Italy, it was worm as a charm to protect from the evil eye.
This red coral charm is encased in high karat gold, giving a richness and warmth to the cabochon. Wear as an everyday charm for whatever reason, it is a beautiful deep red.
