Part of our Mythical Gardens series of charms. Plums have a rich history across cultures, often tied to spring, vitality, resilience, protection and love.
While not as central as apples and pomegranates in mythologies, plums are often used in love magic and as offerings to deities of love and beauty. In Roman mythology, the goddess Pomona - goddess of fruit trees, gardens and orchards - was associated with the flourishing of fruit bearing trees. Her festival, Vertumnalia, celebrated the changing seasons and the abundance of fruit.
In Japan, plum trees are associated with elegance, purity and protection against evil, often planted as talismans in gardens.
