This eagle headed god was originally carved in jasper on the reverse side of an ancient Gnostic magical gem, sometime between the 1st - 6th B.C. It had quite an eclectic and international character, as the imagery was mostly Egyptian, the letters Greek, the god's dress Roman, the angelic names Jewish and the carving and detail were carefully done and very fine. This would have been quite an expensive commission for that time, suggesting perhaps that the owner had some significant expectations of the gem's protective and amuletic powers.
