In Greek and Roman mythologies, the pear is associated with three goddesses: Aphrodite, Hera and Pomona.
They are considered a sacred fruit, linked to fertility, abundance and the harvest. The pear is spoken of in Homer's 9th century B.C. epic poem, The Odessey, as one of the "gifts of the Gods", grown in the garden of Alcinöus, the King of the Phaeacians. The pear's shape and sweetness have made it a symbol of fruitfulness and femininity throughout art and culture.
One legend reads that one of Athens’ most sacred kings, Perdix was cast into the sea to die, from whence the goddess Athena carried him to heaven in the form of a partridge. Perdix was then named “Lord of the Pear Trees” – a title which progressed through history to the Christmas carol, “A Partridge in a Pear Tree”.
The ancient Chinese believed the pear was a symbol of immortality. In Chinese the word “li” means both “pear” and “separation.” Tradition says that to avoid a separation, friends and lovers should not divide a pear.
