Part of our Mythical Gardens series of charms. In Greek mythology, the pears is associated with three goddesses: Aphrodite, Hera and Pomona (the Roman goddess of gardens and trees).
They are considered a sacred fruit, and are linked to various aspects of fertiity, abundance and the harvest. The pear is spoken of in Homer's 9th century B.C. epic poem, The Odessey, as one of the "gifts of the Gods" grown in the garden of Alcinöus, the King of the Phaeacians (Phaeacia was a legendary country). The pear's shape and sweetness have made a symbol of fruitfulness and femininity in art and culture.
One legend reads that one of Athens’ most sacred kings, Perdix was cast into the sea to die, when his goddess Athena carried him to heaven in the form of a partridge. Perdix was then named “Lord of the Pear Trees” – a title which progressed through history to “A Partridge in a Pear Tree”, a Christmas carol.
The ancient Chinese believed the pear was a symbol of immortality. In Chinese the word “li” means both “pear” and “separation.” For this reason, tradition says that to avoid a separation, friends and lovers should not divide a pear.
