Maki-e is a traditional Japanese paint technique developed over a millennia ago where lacquer is applied to surfaces and pure gold or silver paint is mixed in for flat or raised ornamentation. Mosaics are created from tiny abalone shell tiles often accented with the same gold or silver paint.

In these regal earrings, silvery white pearls have been decorated Maki-e style using abalone shell tiles and 24k gold paint.
