According to the early Greek myths, everywhere Pegasus the Winged Horse struck his hoof to the earth, an inspiring water spring burst forth. One such day, Pegasus was peacefully drinking from a spring when Bellepheron, who became King of Corinth, captured him and used the horse in his battle against the Chimera.
There are varying tales about how Bellerophon found Pegasus; the most common being that the goddess Athena gave him a golden bridle with which to catch and eventually tame Pegasus. Pegasus became a civic symbol in Corinth, and his image was struck on its famed silver Staters, which in turn inspired this carving.
