Scorpions were believed to have apotropaic qualities, which is a rather long way of saying they were believed to hold magical powers to turn away bad luck and evil influences, so they were frequently used in amulets and good luck charms.
The renowned Signet Ring of Horemheb, the last Pharaoh of Egypt's 18th Dynasty, was the inspiration for this charm. Horemheb's solid gold signet ring is notable for its size and quality of workmanship. It is especially known for its four-sided rectangular rotating bezel, each side engraved differently - a crocodile, a scorpion, a lion and his coronation name. The size of the ring indicates that it wasn't designed to be worn, rather it served as a seal for applying official stamps, hence the engravings. The ring is held by the Musee du Louvre.
