Since antiquity, the snake has been a powerful symbol of healing, transformation, wisdom and immortality. It was commonly used in protective charms and amulets. Some of those symbols are so enduring that today, the Rod of Asclepius, a serpent entwined about a rod or staff, is universally associated with medicine and health care. The ouroboros, a serpent or dragon eating its own tail, an ancient symbol for the cycle of life, death and rebirth, continues to be popular.
This dainty hand carved snake was inspired by the crawling snake found on the reverse of an ancient Greek rock crystal scarab signet ring from the Archaic period (600-500 B.C.) The rock crystal comes from Ataléia in Brazil which is noted for its exceptional clarity.
